Candidate Dos and Don't: A GANHS Guide to Running for Office

       1.  No more than one candidate may run for office from each chapter.
2.   A candidate must notify the President by March 10, by using the form provided, of the office for which the candidate decides to run.  The letter must include the name of the candidate and his/her advisors and principal’s signatures.
  1. The candidate must be a rising senior.
  1. Candidates for a vacant office may be nominated from the floor in one of two ways at the second business meeting of the convention:
    1. Nomination at large: The candidate must submit a letter of intent by his advisor and principal the first night of the convention.  At the second business meeting, the original candidate and the floor candidate(s) will each be allowed to make a one-minute speech to the assembly after nominations are closed.
    2. Nomination of a previously defeated candidate: A defeated candidate may be nominated for only one vacant or unopposed office.  After nominations are closed, the sliding and the original candidate may each make a one-minute speech to the assembly.
  1. Official campaigning may begin at 4:00 PM on the first day of convention (Sunday). Motel regulations prohibit displays of any materials on the walls, doors, etc. of the motel.  The candidates are permitted one other campaign opportunity.
a.    A one-page (8 ½ x 11) description of the candidate may be included in the packet distributed during registration.  Candidates are responsible for providing the Treasurer 200 copies of their flyer by March10th.The flyers will be placed in the convention packet in order of the office and then alphabetically.  Some suggestions for the description are: A photo of the candidate, the office desired, and any information relevant to their campaign.
b.    A display may be setup at the convention center after 4 PM Sunday.  A science fair type tri-fold board will be the only acceptable board.  Each officer will be allowed one (1) display board only.  No give away items such as candy, buttons, etc., may be given away at the display.  Tables will be provided.  You may make campaign T-shirts or other promotional material that can only be worn by members of your chapter.  You also need to make an 8 ½ by 11-campaign flyer, which will be distributed in the folders by the state board at the convention.  You will be given five minutes to address each voting caucus at convention, so you should write a short speech to present at this time.  Remember to allow some time for the delegates to ask you questions.  You should also select a campaign manager to introduce you to each voting caucus.
6.        Informal campaigning may begin at 4:00 PM on the first day of convention (Sunday) and continue through the election proceedings held at the last meeting.  During this time, the candidate and his/her chapter are encouraged to circulate among other conventioneers to solicit support.  Slogan T-shirts, buttons, hats, etc. may be worn only by the members of the candidate’s own club.  No campaign materials of any kind are to be distributed to other chapters at any time during convention.  This includes food, leaflets or other printed materials, and souvenirs.
  1. No candidate will be permitted to set up hospitality suites or use additional space for campaigning.
  1. Candidates are responsible for any damage caused by their campaign.
  1. All campaign materials must be removed by 9:00 AM on the last day of the convention (Tuesday).
  1. Each candidate will be introduced after dinner on the first night of the convention.
On the second morning of the convention (Monday), the caucuses will meet.  Each caucus will elect spokesperson, a timekeeper, and a secretary.  Each candidate will be allowed 5 minutes to present his/her qualifications for office.  This time may include the introduction of the candidate by his campaign manager, a speech by the candidate himself, and a period of questions.
